This is what winning looks like, according to Vice‘s ironically named documentary on Afghanistan:

“Advising” impoverished nations backfires in predictable ways — a lesson we could have easily learned from Vietnam, or from Nationalist China.

Marines arrive at a base to find all the protective barriers sold off as scrap. Fuel, ammunition — anything really — “falls off a truck” on a regular basis. Police and soldiers force local kids to do their manual labor and hold civilians for ransom. And then there are the truly creepy crimes…

Watching the Afghans “fight” also drives home how much they love to pull the trigger with no idea who or what they’re shooting at. It’s no wonder they see small arms as ineffective and demand heavy weapons. Of course, wild shooting means (a) they don’t hit the “enemy”, who might only be our enemy, and (b) they get more ammo from us, and can sell off the spent casings.

I just stumbled upon the VICE video podcast, and on Episode 4 they had Ben Anderson, the guy who made “What Winning Looks Like”, back for a little follow up interview: Have We Won in Afghanistan?

Bruce: Begun, the drone wars have. Small drones are cheap and effective. Big drones, airplanes, and any static target you can Google is vulnerable. In ‘General Kenney Reports’, Kenney’s memoir of the Pacific War, he mentions Lindberg showing up quasi-illegally. Kenney put the man who babied a single-engine plane across the Atlantic in charge of training P-38 pilots to baby their fuel use, and P-38 ranges doubled.

Bob Sykes: Calling Mohamed Farrah Aidid’s militia a mob is a bit much, but they were lightly armed and poorly trained. However, they defeated the US/UN mission to Somalia, or at least fought it to a draw. We’re still fighting Aidid’s grandchildren, and we still haven’t won. The war is now in its 4th decade, with no end in sight. Settling aside our Indian Wars (1607 to 1918). Somalia is the longest US war.
McChuck: Anybody who has ever played a wargame can tell you that your defenses can handle a certain amount of opposition, but when enemy numbers, regardless of quality, exceed that number, you get overrun. The mobs in Mogadishu back in 1993 weren’t well organized, weren’t well equipped, weren’t well trained, and weren’t well led. But there sure were a whole lot of them shooting at the Rangers.

Phileas Frogg: The class divide in the US is as deep and wide as any as has existed in history, but instead of acknowledging the divide, much less trying to bridge it, we have chosen moralization and mutual animosity, which will be the death of us.
