Michael Shermer, founder/publisher of Skeptic Magazine, and author of several books, including Why People Believe Weird Things
, gave an amusing TEDTalk on people’s cognitive biases and how they affect the strange things people believe in — from alien encounters to Virgin Mary sightings on pizza pies, to hidden messages revealed while playing “Stairway to Heaven” backwards.
(One of his examples draws on the work of Dr. Daniel Simons at the University of Illinois. I’ve blogged on Simons’ work before.)
