Does Unemployment Presage Crime?

The recent economic crisis seems to have kicked off a rash of mass murders. But does unemployment presage crime? Yes and no:

In a 2002 study, Eric Gould, Bruce Weinberg and Mr. Mustard sliced up nearly two decades of wage, unemployment and crime data, using regression analyses to probe whether economic factors were causing changes in crime rates. The relationships were strong for crimes like burglary and larceny. Violent crimes were harder to pin down.

“You kind of see it for murder, and you kind of don’t see it for murder,” says Mr. Weinberg, of Ohio State University. He surmises that murders show a weak effect because some — drug murders, mostly — are economically motivated as gangs kill to expand their turf.

In a forthcoming paper, Naci Mocan at Louisiana State University studied state-level unemployment and crime data, as well as the histories of a cohort of 27,000 people born in Philadelphia in 1958. For both sets of data, property crimes showed a link to unemployment, while murder and rape had little connection, if any.

It’s not just the U.S. A study a decade ago in New Zealand found a significant link between “dishonesty” offenses — a category including theft, burglary and fraud — and unemployment, but no parallel link with violent crimes like murder, though rape did show an association.

But what about mass murders? Mr. Levin, the Northeastern University criminologist, says mass murderers fit a different profile than single-victim killers and thus can’t easily be compared. “The data, the evidence about violent crime in general, doesn’t seem to apply to mass killings,” he says. Mass murderers, he adds, are generally a peculiar sort: more likely than single-victim killers to be socially isolated, for instance, and with greater access to guns.

Unfortunately, their time traveler essentials poster strikes me as less than ideal for hanging in your time machine.

Am I supposed to need a poster to remind me that an airplane wing is an airfoil? If so, am I then supposed to know everything else needed for building a heavier-than-air craft from primitive materials?

And who makes a time-travel cheat sheet without the formula for gunpowder? Seriously. Amateurs. Oh, and good luck asking the natives for some potassium nitrate.

Why the Red Wings Don’t Fight

“I’d love to be able to beat your team and beat your team up, but it’s impossible to do,” says Ken Holland, general manager of the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings:

For a decade now, the Red Wings have had the fewest fights in the league. This season, their 11 fights would hardly constitute a single boxing match.

Borrowing from the Russian hockey model, the Red Wings went completely against the grain and assembled a Russian line whose members could pass, skate and evade defenders with equal skill, making it more difficult for opponents to slash, check or punch their way to victory. “They didn’t put themselves in a position to be hit,” says Mr. Holland.

The philosophy led to a Stanley Cup win in 1997 and the team has continued the philosophy ever since, winning three more Cups. For years, the Red Wings kept one or two players on their roster who could skate well and fight if necessary, but in the salary cap era, the premiums on those players forced Detroit to make a choice between skills and toughness.

At the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center, Ben Sherwood (The Survivors Club) explains, they quickly figure out who will be capable of accomplishing dangerous underwater missions:

They take young sailors and tie their hands behind their backs and bind their feet. They put the strap of a dive mask between the sailors’ teeth and then throw them in the Olympic-size pool. The challenge is to stay afloat and live. “The more someone struggles,” Morgan tells me, “the harder it is to get air and the more tired they get. You just have to inhibit the powerful, incredible instinct to breathe and your anxiety and alarm.” Morgan knows how scary it is because they also tied him up and threw him in so he could understand what the sailors were going through. Most trainees quickly realize that the only way to avoid drowning is to relax and sink to the bottom of the pool, kick off powerfully toward the surface, gasp for a little bit of air through clenched teeth and then fall back into the water and drop down to the bottom again.

During this testing, a lot of sailors black out. They simply don’t get enough oxygen and lose consciousness. Morgan has watched many of them sink to the bottom of the pool before divers pull them to the surface. On the deck, the unconscious sailors are rolled on their sides, and as soon as they revive, an instructor shouts again and again: “Are you gonna quit? Are you gonna quit?” Sailors are given 30 seconds to answer or they’re kicked out of the program. If they say they want to keep going, they’re given another 30 seconds to recover and then they’re thrown back into the pool. It may sound sadistic, but the Navy is simply trying to identify who will survive the most dangerous missions and who won’t. Through this grueling test, it finds soldiers and sailors who refuse to give up, who can suppress the need to breathe, who trust that they’ll be rescued if something goes wrong and who are prepared to lose consciousness — or even die — following orders.

The two teenagers who killed 13 people and themselves at suburban Denver’s Columbine High School 10 years ago next week weren’t in the “Trenchcoat Mafia,” disaffected videogamers who wore cowboy dusters. The killings ignited a national debate over bullying, but the record now shows Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold hadn’t been bullied — in fact, they had bragged in diaries about picking on freshmen and “fags.”

Their rampage put schools on alert for “enemies lists” made by troubled students, but the enemies on their list had graduated from Columbine a year earlier. Contrary to early reports, Harris and Klebold weren’t on antidepressant medication and didn’t target jocks, blacks or Christians, police now say, citing the killers’ journals and witness accounts. That story about a student being shot in the head after she said she believed in God? Never happened, the FBI says now.

In fact, the pair’s suicidal attack was planned as a grand — if badly implemented — terrorist bombing that quickly devolved into a 49-minute shooting rampage when the bombs Harris built fizzled.

Optimists are the first to die

Ben Sherwood (The Survivors Club) explains the Stockdale Paradoxoptimists are the first to die:

A positive mental attitude is an incredibly important part of survival, but a naïve or foolhardy attitude can be dangerous. It’s a phenomenon known as the Stockdale Paradox, named after Admiral James Stockdale, the highest ranking American prisoner of war in Vietnam. In the POW camps, optimists were the first to die, Stockdale told author Jim Collins in his bestselling book Good to Great. Optimists were always hoping to be released at Thanksgiving or Christmas, but were crushed when those holidays passed and they were still imprisoned. They couldn’t stand the disappointment and gave up fighting, Stockdale said. Soon after, they died. In the toughest situations, experts say, you should exercise “realistic optimism.” That means combining a blunt factual appreciation of your predicament with steadfast hope that things will turn out okay.

Two Ideas That Would Explode If Combined

Paul Graham has been holding in his head two ideas that would explode if combined — metaphorically:

The first is that startups may represent a new economic phase, on the scale of the Industrial Revolution. I’m not sure of this, but there seems a decent chance it’s true. People are dramatically more productive as founders or early employees of startups — imagine how much less Larry and Sergey would have achieved if they’d gone to work for a big company — and that scale of improvement can change social customs.

The second idea is that startups are a type of business that flourishes in certain places that specialize in it — that Silicon Valley specializes in startups in the same way Los Angeles specializes in movies, or New York in finance.

What if both are true? What if startups are both a new economic phase and also a type of business that only flourishes in certain centers?

When in doubt, go to your customers, Norm Brodsky (The Knack) says, looking back at the transit strike his fledgling courier service faced in its first year:

I realized I was facing a potential disaster. Perfect Courier was barely seven months old. We were doing about $30,000 or $40,000 a month in sales. Deliveries by car or truck accounted for about one-third of our revenue. The rest came from messengers who got around the city on public transportation. Losing the messenger sales would cripple us. Granted, we could live off our receivables for a while, but we wouldn’t be generating very many new ones. What would we do when the cash ran out?

And there were other issues: How would our people get to work? For that matter, how would our customers’ people get to work? Would we be able to keep selling? Would our customers stop paying us? How would we meet payroll? We couldn’t very well lay everybody off for the duration of the strike, which — for all we knew — could go on for months. Somehow, we had to come up with a plan that would allow us to survive until some sort of settlement was reached. But what kind of a plan?

I was at a loss. I decided I needed advice from someone who’d been through the previous transit strike, in 1966, and could perhaps tell me what to expect. As it happened, one of our clients was a major accounting firm called Oppenheim, Appel, Dixon & Company. The head of the mailroom there was a guy named Sam Revson, who’d been around forever and whom I held in high regard. Because the strike was scheduled for the busiest part of the tax season, I figured Sam might have made some contingency plans, and I wanted to know what they were.

I dropped by his office one day in the middle of March. “Sam,” I asked, “what are you doing for the strike?”

“Why?” he said. “Are you thinking of transporting people during the strike?”

The thought hadn’t occurred to me, but it sounded like a reasonable possibility. “Yeah,” I said.

“That’s a great idea,” he said. “We could really use you. It makes sense, because you have vehicles already.”

“Yeah,” I said. “They’re ready to go.”

“Particularly being located next to Penn Station, like you are,” he said. “Assuming the Long Island Railroad doesn’t go out, people could just walk across the street, and you could take them downtown. But how are you going to handle the pickup at the end of the day? Have everybody meet somewhere?”

“Yeah,” I said. “That’s what I’m thinking.”

“It’s probably the way to go,” Sam said. “What are you going to charge?”

“I figure $20 a person,” I said, picking a number out of the air.

“Each way or round trip?” he asked. He didn’t seem to have any problem with the price.

“Each way,” I said. “So, $40 round trip.”

“How are you going to know which people are coming back with you?” he asked.

“Once we take them downtown, we assume they’re coming back, and so you have to pay for the round trip.”

“OK,” Sam said. “Are you going to issue passes or sell tickets or what?”

“We’re going to issue passes,” I said. “And we’re going to number them. How many people do you think you’ll have?”

“Well, if it’s just a transit strike, not a Long Island Railroad strike, we’ll have about 50 people,” he said. “How often do you plan to run the shuttle?”

Suddenly, it’s a shuttle. “About every half-hour,” I said. “They’ll come up to our place. We’ll have coffee and doughnuts for them, at no charge.”

“What if there’s a Long Island Railroad strike as well?” he asked.

“We’ll have a carpool service,” I said, thinking fast. “We’ll have pickup points on Long Island, one on the North Shore, one on the South Shore, and a couple in Queens.”

“Sounds good,” Sam said. “Do you want a deposit?”

“Yeah, of course,” I said, “and I’ll need a week’s worth, because we have to set up this whole system. You’re the first person I came to, because you’re our best customer. I have only so much capacity. If you want to do this, I’ll need the deposit right now.”

“OK,” he said. “What if the strike doesn’t happen?”

“The deposit is nonrefundable,” I said.

“OK,” he said. I left with a check for $10,000.

When I got back to my office, I told everybody what had happened, and we all had a good laugh. Then we went to work calling our other customers, making laminated strike passes, and figuring out how we were going to accommodate all the people who wanted to take advantage of our new service. The truth was, we had only four vehicles, and we had to get our own people to work as well. “How can we possibly do this?” my employees asked as more and more customers signed up.

“I have no idea,” I said, “but we’d better come up with something.”

We decided to call everyone we knew who worked in Manhattan and owned a car. “Here’s the deal,” we said. “We’re going to pay you to drive into the city, plus we’ll cover your parking, gas, tolls, everything. You’re going to have to drive anyway. With us, you can make money doing it. You just have to agree to take some other people with you.”

We managed to put together a network of about 40 drivers — friends, friends of friends, relatives, friends of relatives, relatives of friends, you name it — and were ready when the strike began on April 1. Coordinating the operation proved to be the biggest challenge. During the strike, some of the drivers got sick, while others ran into conflicts and couldn’t make it. The needs of our customers were constantly changing as well. I wound up sleeping at the office along with two of my employees to handle the calls that came in from customers all night long and to find replacements for the dropout drivers.

In the end, the transit strike lasted almost two full workweeks. The Long Island Railroad workers went out as well, but only for a day. Still, the city was in chaos. There weren’t nearly enough cabs to accommodate the thousands of people looking for rides. We did our best to adapt. Among other things, we came up with a new system for the messengers who didn’t depend on public transportation. Far from declining, our messenger and delivery business boomed during the strike. So did our new car service. As word spread about what we were doing, more and more people contacted us. Commuters arriving on the Long Island Railroad would come across the street to our office and ask for a lift downtown. We’d tell them, “Unless you’re a customer, we can’t help you.” We landed a lot of new accounts that way.

Just as important, our ties with our existing customers became closer. Before the strike, for example, we’d had only a small portion of the delivery business that Sam’s firm did, and we’d had no contact with the senior people. During the strike, we saw them every day, and they became our friends, as did the executives at other accounts. They came to our office for coffee and doughnuts. Our people would serve them and then drive them downtown. A lot of them increased the amount of business they did with us. At the end of the strike, our monthly sales were more than twice what they’d been at the beginning.

By then, of course, we were ready for it to be over. Although we’d done well financially, the 11 days of the strike had been utterly exhausting. Aside from the additional cash and the new sales, I took away from the episode one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in business: When in doubt, go to your customers.

Sinking the Boat or Missing the Boat

James Surowiecki notes that firms going into a recession are worried more about either sinking the boat or missing the boat:

In the late nineteen-twenties, two companies — Kellogg and Post — dominated the market for packaged cereal. It was still a relatively new market: ready-to-eat cereal had been around for decades, but Americans didn’t see it as a real alternative to oatmeal or cream of wheat until the twenties. So, when the Depression hit, no one knew what would happen to consumer demand. Post did the predictable thing: it reined in expenses and cut back on advertising. But Kellogg doubled its ad budget, moved aggressively into radio advertising, and heavily pushed its new cereal, Rice Krispies. (Snap, Crackle, and Pop first appeared in the thirties.) By 1933, even as the economy cratered, Kellogg’s profits had risen almost thirty per cent and it had become what it remains today: the industry’s dominant player.

You’d think that everyone would want to emulate Kellogg’s success, but, when hard times hit, most companies end up behaving more like Post. They hunker down, cut spending, and wait for good times to return. They make fewer acquisitions, even though prices are cheaper. They cut advertising budgets. And often they invest less in research and development. They do all this to preserve what they have. But there’s a trade-off: numerous studies have shown that companies that keep spending on acquisition, advertising, and R. & D. during recessions do significantly better than those which make big cuts. In 1927, the economist Roland Vaile found that firms that kept ad spending stable or increased it during the recession of 1921-22 saw their sales hold up significantly better than those which didn’t. A study of advertising during the 1981-82 recession found that sales at firms that increased advertising or held steady grew precipitously in the next three years, compared with only slight increases at firms that had slashed their budgets. And a McKinsey study of the 1990-91 recession found that companies that remained market leaders or became serious challengers during the downturn had increased their acquisition, R. & D., and ad budgets, while companies at the bottom of the pile had reduced them.

Taras Bulba

I’ve been meaning to read my copy of Taras Bulba for a while; now Nikolai Gogol’s romantic nationalist tale has been made into a big-budget movie that is rekindling a cultural war between Russians and Ukranians:

A lush $20 million film adaptation of the book was rolled out at a jam-packed premiere in Moscow on April 1, complete with rows of faux Cossacks on horseback. Vladimir V. Bortko’s movie, financed in part by the Russian Ministry of Culture, is a work of sword-rattling patriotism that moved some viewers in Moscow to tears.

It is also a salvo in a culture war between Russia and Ukraine’s Western-leaning leadership. The film’s heroes are Ukrainian Cossacks, but they fight an enemy from the West and reserve their dying words for “the Orthodox Russian land.”

Mr. Bortko aimed to show that “there is no separate Ukraine,” as he put it in an interview, and that “the Russian people are one.” Filing out of the premiere, audience members said they hoped it would increase pro-Russian feeling in Ukraine.

The teaser trailer has me impressed. It is odd to see Polish winged hussars as bad guys though, and it’s odd to see so much — ahem — of the love interest:

Fake feathers could take the drag out of flights

Alessandro Bottaro at the University of Genoa has “demonstrated” — in a computer simulation — how fake feathers could take the drag out of flights by reducing turbulence behind an aircraft:

Their synthetic feathers are modelled as rigid keratin bristles 4 to 6 centimetres long and 0.5 millimetres in diameter, coating the cylinder at a density of around three fibres per square centimetre. The cylinder was orientated with its long axis perpendicular to the air flow, placing the synthetic feathers parallel to the wind.

As the wind speed increased the bristles started to vibrate in a similar way to real covert feathers, reducing the drag on the cylinder by 15%.

The researchers say that’s because the fibres help to cushion the effects of the air flow on the cylinder itself. Normally the air flows rapidly across the cylinder and creates an area of low pressure behind it. This encourages the formation of strong vortices, creating turbulence and increasing the drag on the cylinder. Racing car drivers exploit that area of low pressure – the slipstream – to stay close to their rivals without having to combat the drag experienced by the car in front.

With the feathers, the low-pressure slipstream does not form, and the vortices affecting the cylinder are weaker. A similar process explains why fresh, fuzzy tennis balls can speed through the air faster than worn ones, says Bottaro.

Similarly, the dimples on a golf ball improve its performance.

“While working through the negotiations process tonight, the on-scene commander from the Bainbridge made the decision that the captain’s life was in immediate danger, and the three pirates were killed,” Gortney said. “The pirate who surrendered earlier today is being treated humanely; his counterparts who continued to fight paid with their lives.”

The three pirates, who were armed with AK-47 rifles, were killed by shooters who were aboard the Bainbridge, Gortney said.

The on-scene commander gave the shooters approval to open fire after seeing that “one of the pirates had an AK-47 leveled at the captain’s back,” Gortney said.

Scientists Find A DNA Change That Accounts For White Skin

Scientists find a DNA change that accounts for white skin — but they weren’t looking in humans:

The discovery, described in today’s issue of the journal Science, was an unexpected outgrowth of studies Cheng and his colleagues were conducting on inch-long zebra fish, which are popular research tools for geneticists and developmental biologists. Having identified a gene that, when mutated, interferes with its ability to make its characteristic black stripes, the team scanned human DNA databases to see if a similar gene resides in people.

To their surprise, they found virtually identical pigment-building genes in humans, chickens, dogs, cows and many others species, an indication of its biological value.

They got a bigger surprise when they looked in a new database comparing the genomes of four of the world’s major racial groups. That showed that whites with northern and western European ancestry have a mutated version of the gene.

Skin color is a reflection of the amount and distribution of the pigment melanin, which in humans protects against damaging ultraviolet rays but in other species is also used for camouflage or other purposes. The mutation that deprives zebra fish of their stripes blocks the creation of a protein whose job is to move charged atoms across cell membranes, an obscure process that is crucial to the accumulation of melanin inside cells.

Humans of European descent, Cheng’s team found, bear a slightly different mutation that hobbles the same protein with similar effect. The defect does not affect melanin deposition in other parts of the body, including the hair and eyes, whose tints are under the control of other genes.

A few genes have previously been associated with human pigment disorders — most notably those that, when mutated, lead to albinism, an extreme form of pigment loss. But the newly found glitch is the first found to play a role in the formation of “normal” white skin. The Penn State team calculates that the gene, known as slc24a5, is responsible for about one-third of the pigment loss that made black skin white. A few other as-yet-unidentified mutated genes apparently account for the rest.

Although precise dating is impossible, several scientists speculated on the basis of its spread and variation that the mutation arose between 20,000 and 50,000 years ago. That would be consistent with research showing that a wave of ancestral humans migrated northward and eastward out of Africa about 50,000 years ago.

Unlike most mutations, this one quickly overwhelmed its ancestral version, at least in Europe, suggesting it had a real benefit. Many scientists suspect that benefit has to do with vitamin D, made in the body with the help of sunlight and critical to proper bone development.

Europeans aren’t the only light-skinned humans though:

The work also reveals for the first time that Asians owe their relatively light skin to different mutations. That means that light skin arose independently at least twice in human evolution, in each case affecting populations with the facial and other traits that today are commonly regarded as the hallmarks of Caucasian and Asian races.

The Stone Age meets the Digital Age as University of Washington researchers use 3D-printing to produce clay pots:

About five years ago, Mark Ganter, a UW mechanical engineering professor and longtime practitioner of 3-D printing, became frustrated with the high cost of commercial materials and began experimenting with his own formulas. He and his students gradually developed a home-brew approach, replacing a proprietary mix with artists’ ceramic powder blended with sugar and maltodextrin, a nutritional supplement. The results are printed in a recent issue of Ceramics Monthly. Co-authors are Duane Storti, UW associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Ben Utela, a former UW doctoral student.

“Normally these supplies cost $30 to $50 a pound. Our materials cost less than a dollar a pound,” said Ganter. He said he wants to distribute the free recipes in order to democratize 3-D printing and expand the range of printable objects.


“When powders are $30 a pound, I can’t let students try something new or experimental,” Ganter said. “But when it’s $1 a pound, I don’t care. I encourage them to try new things.”

The lab can go through $4,000 of materials per quarter, he said. In the 15 years of the lab’s operation, bills for materials dwarf the roughly $20,000 initial costs for a printer.

Lab fees were already at the maximum, Ganter said, so instead the group went looking for a different approach: cheaper materials.

“If we’re in trouble financially, imagine what’s it like at a high school or a technical school?”

“Clay is dirt cheap,” Ganter noted, which led to these recipes, based on ceramic powders that are sold at local pottery stores by the 50-pound bag:

The Conduit of Culture

A major effect of the short lifespan of hunter-gatherers was the crippling absence of grandparents:

Given that women would only start bearing by 17 or so, and die by their thirties, it would be common for parents leave their children in their tweens. We tend to think that a shorter lifespan is rotten — for the individual — and no doubt it is. But a short lifespan is extremely detrimental for a society as well. Because without grandparents, it becomes exceedingly difficult to transmit knowledge over time. Grandparents are the conduit of culture, and without them, culture stagnates.

Imagine a society that not only lacked grandparents but also lacked language — as the pre-Sapiens did. How would learning be transmitted over generations? Your own parents would die before you were an adult and in any case, they could not communicate to you anything beyond what they could show you while you were immature. You would certainly not learn anything from anyone outside your immediate circle of peers. Innovation and cultural learning cease to flow.
