The wellness-to-woo pipeline

Sunday, August 6th, 2023

James Ball, writing in The Guardian, is shocked and appalled that the wellness movement has shifted from hippy to fascist:

“They have been moving generally to far-right views, bordering on racism, and really pro-Russian views, with the Ukraine war,” she says. “It started very much with health, with ‘Covid doesn’t exist’, anti-lockdown, anti-masks, and it became anti-everything: the BBC lie, don’t listen to them; follow what you see on the internet.”

Things came to a head when one day, before a meditation session — an activity designed to relax the mind and spirit, pushing away all worldly concerns — the group played a conspiratorial video arguing that 15-minute cities and low-traffic zones were part of a global plot. Jane finally gave up.

This apparent radicalisation of a nice, middle-class, hippy-ish group feels as if it should be a one-off, but the reality is very different. The “wellness-to-woo pipeline” — or even “wellness-to-fascism pipeline” — has become a cause of concern to people who study conspiracy theories.

This shouldn’t be surprising. German Romanticism led to both hippies and Nazis.

  1. Pseudo-Chrysostom says:

Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.

Once somebody knows for sure some body is in male fide about something, everything they say about everything is suspect, especially when they can’t personally attest to adeptness in all those different spheres as they might in the one they did.

And extensively, it elaborates to everything else in their social network; what others bodies are related to this body, positively or negatively disposed to the body, also say the same things as that body, et cetera et cetera.

And by the end of it, the act of pulling on one thread can end up unraveling and reknitting a whole sweater’s worth of weltanschauung.

    Pseudo-Chrysostom nailed it.

You never recover from the first time you realize the system has lied to you all your life. In one topic. In my and many other’s case, it was about sexual relationships. All this crap about “be Mr. Nice Guy, worship women and they will love you”. But, for others, COVID was the first time.

Once you know that the system can lie to you, the logical step is “what else are they lying to me about?”. Then you can’t accept something only because “TV says so”. You start to investigate and discover that the modern world is like an onion: layer after layer of lies

The Left’s obsession with identity politic necessarily leads to Fascism and Nazism, which defined by their nationalistic/racial concepts. Oppressed working-class and middle-class Whites have no other recourse.

By the way, why do we use Teh Grauniad as a source?

Compared to the alternative, Fascism is healthy.
