What does it mean when Hayao Miyazaki — whose films often feature peace-loving, young, female protagonists — follows his love of aviation and makes a film about Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the Zero? This trailer for The Wind Rises starts off in classic Miyazaki style:

    Is it his love of aviation (already beautifully realized in Porco Rosso) or his love of Japanese militarism? Maybe he feels old and secure enough these days to risk revealing his nostalgia for the old ways?

  2. Faze, while that is certainly a (very subdued) thread still present in Japanese culture, Miyazaki’s canon exhibits an almost obsessive anti-militarism that contradicts your suggestion.
