Post-Apocalyptic, with Uplifted Animals

So, Alastair Reynolds (@AquilaRift) is reading this debut fantasy novel, and it’s really good:

It’s post-apocalyptic, with uplifted animals living in the ruins of human civilisation. Steampunky.

  1. Ross says:

Isegoria, you might want to check that link. Unless this is a very “in” joke, it probably shouldn’t point to the classic Wind in the Willows by Graeme.

  2. Isegoria says:

Ah, I guess “in” is in the eye of the beholder. I thought it was cute to reinterpret the classic children’s novel as post-apocalyptic steampunk, where the talking animals were genetically engineered to be that way, and there were no humans because they’d been wiped out.

  3. Ross says:

Yeah, it is cute. Funny. Most jokes don’t get better once explained.

(But being pointed to A. Reynolds is a good find in itself, and I may start with House of Suns.)
