The McLaughlin Group Library : Transcript

Tuesday, March 1st, 2005

I don’t generally watch John McLaughlin’s One on One, but I stumbled across a transcript from the February 12-13, 2005 episode, with guests David Boaz, Executive Vice President of the Cato Institute, and Nick Gillespie, Editor in Chief of Reason magazine (whom I’ve met). The subject, naturally, was libertarianism:

MR. MCLAUGHLIN: The age of reason. In this age of political polarization, where supposedly clear divisions split liberal from conservative, Republican from Democrat, red from blue, and right from wrong, not everyone plays that game. For libertarians, there is a third way. The motto of their flagship magazine, Reason, is “Free minds and free markets.”

What’s the libertarian alternative? Why does libertarianism bring out the counterculture, the hippie, the flower child, the non-anarchist anarchist in conservatives? We’ll ask Reason Editor in Chief Nick Gillespie and Executive Vice President of the Cato Institute David Boaz.
