In 1981, before the Schwarzenegger Conan the Barbarian movie came out, Mattel released its He-Man toy — with an illustrated He-Man and the Power Sword booklet:

  1. Felix says:

By the time my kid had He-Man, He-Man and his fellow nobles were the bad guys disguised with pretty faces and Skeletor was the good guy behind an ugly face.

He-Man flew around a pastoral kingdom in a flying car while his peasants/serfs toiled in fields with rude tools and lived in medieval, thatched-roof houses.

Skeletor was always launching projects to change this world. He-Man and his ilk didn’t like the idea of their fiefdom changing. So, Skeletor was evil for that. Oh. And the color of his skin. And the look of his head.
