There are 300,000 Muslims in the DC area, making goat farming a growth industry:

I love goat meat (can’t remember if there’s a specific name for it). I also have a Greek friend who grew up in the DC area whose father would get a goat every year and roast it for Greek easter. Or maybe it was a lamb, I never got the story straight.

I had an Indian friend refer to goat meat as mutton, and that struck me as odd, because mutton is (adult) sheep meat, but apparently that usage is common in South Asia. The modern fashionable term for goat meat is chevon meat, from the French.

A few years back we had an Irish friend living near DC who wanted to hold a Thanksgiving dinner for the other non-Americans at her work. Since one couple was Muslim, our friend went to the local Muslim market to get a halal turkey. She called us in a panic, asking us Americans how to prepare a Thanksgiving turkey, because the bird she bought still had the neck. No, that’s not normal, we had to explain to her.

Around that same time, the admin at my work was trying to get everything prepared for a small conference our firm was holding in southern Utah, and one of the attendees was Muslim and requested halal food. So she found a place online, and their big, bold slogan, plastered across their web page, was Hand-slaughtered by a Muslim!. This was not that long after 9/11, around the time of the Iraq invasion. I guess we weren’t in their target demographic.
