Anomaly UK informs me that The Guardian — originally the Manchester Guardian — was not founded to support radicals, like those at the Peterloo Massacre. It has always been a centre-left publication, in favor of liberal causes, but against direct action.
I also was also unaware of its nickname — The Grauniad — which goes back to an apocryphal typo in its own masthead.
