Practical Guidance for Prudent Students

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

Bryan Caplan offers practical guidance for prudent students deciding how much schooling to pursue:

  • Go to high school unless you’re a terrible student.
  • Go to college only if you’re a strong student or special case.
  • Don’t get a master degree unless the stars align.

Caplan is usually a compass pointing south — you could build quite a life and career for yourself just doing the opposite of what he says. He does have a point, there are a lot of people in college who really shouldn’t be there, but thanks to guys like Caplan the jobs that people who didn’t go to college used to do are now being done by Mexicans, or have been sent offshore. So what are kids in the left half of the bell curve supposed to do, shine Caplan’s shoes? Probably. Heckuva job, Bryan.

I’d guess he’d recommend they go into the trades.

That might work — for now. But there are a lot of good plumbers, electricians, and carpenters south of the border who could make a lot more here. Heck, I can remember college kids working as roofers to make money in the summer — not anymore.
