Living by the Odds

Wednesday, August 12th, 2015

Scott Adams (Dilbert) explains how he very consciously lived by the odds and sought opportunities throughout his career:

I took LOTS of risks with side projects that I hoped would grow into something good. But in each case the risk was one of embarrassment, lost sleep, and wasted time. If one thing did not work out, I would simply move to the next. Dilbert was my first side project that worked.

Most of you would see the success of Dilbert as good luck. And it was. But financially it was probably bad luck because I was a young, ambitious, white, highly-educated man with an entrepreneurial personality living on the edge of Silicon Valley. My best guess is that if cartooning had not worked out, I would have cashed out of a few start-ups by now and would be far richer.

Great post. Thanks. Good reminder to keep on taking good risk-reward opportunities. Or, in Scott Adams’ case, putting out x amount of effort on the possibility that 10x reward — in an area you care about — is possible.

It’s easy to get lazy once one gets settled in life.

Speaking of, Adams on the clown genius of Trump.

Who, by releasing his immigration reform plan, just “delivered a roundhouse kick to the groins of GOP cuckservatives, which would hurt them if they had any balls to begin with”, to quote Chateau Heartiste.

Also, that someone at Buckeye Firearms was Greg Ellifritz. I have definitely cited his An Alternate Look at Handgun Stopping Power.
