I’ve been watching Alias – The Second Season, and, while it is silly and over the top, it’s pretty fun and intriguing too:
The critically acclaimed show owed a debt to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its mix of action, romance, mystery, and moral quandaries, but in this season Alias truly came into its own — with a climax that came as a total shocker and prepped the show for an emotionally volatile third season.
Anyway, I’ve noticed a few particularly amusing pop-culture references.
In “A Higher Echelon”, techno-nerd Marshall finally ends up in the field with Sydney, and he has a gadget that can save the two of them. He stops to say: “My name is Marshall J. Flinkman, and I’m here to rescue you!” It took me a bit to make the reference: “I’m Luke Skywalker. I’m here to rescue you!”
In “Double Agent”, the first few bars of “Moving in Stereo” kicked in, and I immediately — like any red-blooded American male — thought of Phoebe Cates getting out of the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Sure enough, a few second later, Jennifer Garner’s getting out of the pool. That’s as far as the homage goes though.
Incidentally, the Cars’ “Moving in Stereo” is not on the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack, despite being the soundtrack for the movie’s most often cited scene.
