Ex-NFL player beats ex-sumo wrestler in K-1

Saturday, January 3rd, 2004

Back in November, K-1 announced a kickboxing match between Bob Sapp — a beast who’s 6’7″ and 374 lbs, ripped — and Akebono — a former sumo grand champion (yokozuna). ESPN.com actually reported on it:

Former sumo wrestler Akebono didn’t last long in his K-1 debut against Bob Sapp.

Sapp, a former NFL lineman with the Minnesota Vikings, used a left-right combination to floor the massive Hawaiian-born wrestler in the waning seconds of the first round in the three-round bout before 43,500 at Nagoya Dome.

You really, really have to watch the video. A few observations:

  • Akebono is a fat sack.
  • Akebono can’t punch.
  • Akebono forgets to protect his head.
  • Akebono dwarfs Sapp.
  • Akebono knows how to check a leg kick.
  • Akebono’s wife is petrified to see him in the kickboxing ring.

Watch the video.
