Every educational concern or observation in the modern world comes down to this:

"Unless and until we finally accept that people are no more equal in their educability and intelligence than they are in their ability to sprint 100m, dunk a basketball or stand 7 feet tall, we will continue to waste limited time, energy, and resources on solving a problem without a solution: men are not equal."

God needs all sorts. And yet, every class of person projects their narrow measure of value onto the whole. Teachers usually liked school and academics, so they measure value and success by one's ability to score well on academic measures. Successful entrepreneurs like making social connections and money, so they link success to acquisitiveness. Blue Collar guys value a hard days work and a product at the end, etc, etc, etc. In a sense you can't blame people for applying what they know, but we're so confident that what we believe to know is so, we can't wrap our heads around when it isn't.
