Not fucking one of you lazy incurious fucking clowns had posted a single fucking source showing that Mississippi's early elementary curricula across the state was "whole word" and that it completely shifted to "phonics", and when this happened.

This is a really fascinating report, and it highlights three things Mississippi did to fix their schools:

1. Require the teaching of phonics.
2. Require teachers be *trained* in teaching phonics.
3. Require third-graders who cannot read at a proper level to repeat the grade. x.com/kelseytuoc/sta…

We have repeatedly had good news stories about striking successes in educating poor students that on investigation turned out to be frauds.

That said, a general return to phonics would be a very good thing.

PS. There is a long-term downward trend in literacy among American adults. American literacy rates are well below European norms and much lower than Russian and Chinese norms.

https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/41319.John_Taylor_Gatto

John Taylor Gatto knew it would get this bad.

We can zoom out and take a broader view. Education is one set of symptoms. Another widespread problem is a refusal to make upper-class white liberal ladies feel bad. We can't blame lazy students because a white liberal lady would swoop out of nowhere and sabotage the effort, destroying one or more good men in the process. Another broad problem is that the school systems start with metrics, and those metrics cease to function when they become targets.
