The Great Western Retreat is already well underway and irreversible. It started with the spiritual retreat, was followed by the political retreat, and is finally entering the economic retreat. From the US to Germany, from France to the Netherlands, we’re busily eliminating the last vestiges of our major industries, which we were already slowly losing dominance of to begin with.

The final component will be a cultural retreat, where the non-Western countries openly challenge the assumed goodness of Liberty, Pluralism, and Secularism, and the terms associated with them in international diplomacy. Several sub-state actors have been openly doing this for a few decades (mostly in the Islamic world), and we’re beginning to see overt talk of decoupling from Western conceptual norms by major countries (Russia and China). We’ll know the process is done once it becomes acceptable for countries to publicly say: “We don’t care about Women’s Rights/Minority Rights/Rules of Warfare.”

What remains to be seen is whether this will herald a Western Rapprochement between the people and their governments, or the next phase of Global Empire, this time with the Global South and East dominating the Global North and West.
