This has led to tremendous growth in SD’s service sector. Citibank alone employs 3200 people in its credit card division in Sioux Falls. Financial service companies employ well over 20,000 people in South Dakota. There are only 5,000 state government employees in SD.

I’ve opened a couple of bank accounts in France as a US citizen. All the banks here have big US branches so seem to have zero problem dealing with the FATCA requirements.

We do have to declare the bank accounts to the USA each year at tax time, and we still have to do USA farm taxes despite our farm being in France and getting taxed in France too.

True story, my bank sent me a fatca form a couple of years ago to sight, even though i have nothing to do with nor did i ever went to the United States, the IRS is really pressing European banks hard. As a consequence it’s now almost impossible for Americans to open local bank accounts in the European Union, nor Switzerland, where all that renowned bank secrecy stuff is also all but gone.
