.303 SMLE rifle still in use [?] by the Canadian Rangers of the far north and also by the para-military Indian police. That ideal weapon so it is said for arctic warfare. The Canadians trying to find a replacement but why try to improve with what ever you have that is good enough?

The amount of BS and outright magical thinking surrounding weapons has always been with us, and I imagine it always will be. I have no doubt but that the Romans likely argued the lethality of the various sword strokes, targets on the body, and the efficacy of the various types of swords and spears with similar enthusiasm.
