A few years ago I saw two young men heading for a quiet path in a town (a path away from any CCTV cameras), walking at the same pace with one lagging behind the other by a couple of steps: the ‘back man’ was the one checking repeatedly over his shoulder while the front one was scanning ahead. My instincts then were this pair were up to no good.

That hand motion over and over with the cigarette disturbing to the officer and with good reason.

I’ve long despaired that I lack the facility to be doing this well at all unless doing it consciously, and nothing else. Which is not a plausible way to walk down the street.

The sort of thing worth teaching youth, once old enough not to freak out and assume everything is stranger danger.
