Probably cells and genes themselves can get addicted or degenerate to a certain behavior like a person that gets into self-destructive behavior. Stress levels — or no stress, which gives no data — or erroneous data can damage an appropriate response, assuming it even exists.

Evolution is not only a way up.

Thus Gryffindor must be fire, Slytherin’s flexible, deceitful nature fits water, Ravenclaw must be air, and Hufflepuff must be earth.

JKR knew that. Slytherin’s dungeon was below the lake, Ravenclaw has a tower, Hufflepuff is associated with gardening (the Herbology professor is the head of house), and Griffindor is associated in all kinds of ways with fire.
