My memory could be wrong.

On that note, maybe “crystals” date from crystal radio days. As in this air-tight logic:

1) “Crystals” are used in radio.

2) Radios are a (magical) communication device used over great distances.

3) So it makes sense that you’d use a “crystal” to communicate with the astral plane.
