The challenge comes to those who wish to disrupt the system and do not pay costs for ostracization. For the Puritans that was the Quaker missionaries, who would pull stunts like showing up to church naked. Ostracisisn didn’t work as they originally were not part of the system. Exile didn’t work as they just came back. In the end only one thing worked: death.
