It turned out that if deterrence is your objective, then a .22 LR is as effective as a .44 Mag. The guy shot with the .44 Mag is dead or badly crippled, but the guy shot with the .22 LR is in such pain that he almost always goes away. Same for .25, .32, .38 spc, 9 mm, .357, .44 spc, .45 acp, etc.
