After having a stroke a former Sheriff Deputy I have known for over 30 years began freely talking about his experiences during the Korean War. Prior to that he never spoke of the War even to his wife. He had been a non-commissioned officer in the Army. During one especially bleak period of holding the line against the Chinese multiple attacks were repulsed. His unit, he said, had terrible commanding officers and they were panicking so he and a few of men he selected as being worthy moved to the side of their defense line so that they abutted a Turkish unit. When the next and last attack commenced the American position cracked and the Chinese swept over the American unit. He and his men crossed over to the Turks and survived the onslaught. All of the other Americans he said were killed or captured. He survived. He said that the Turks were real fighters: hard as rocks. I heard many other similar Korean War stories from him.
