The weapons actually sound dangerous for one thing, while in much SF right down to today they sound annoying or even comical. The low, electric buzz of a lightsaber and the sharp, whining pulse of a blaster both immediately inform the viewer that there are deadly amounts of energy involved.

The only thing that could be better would be realistic laser or particle-beam weapons in a movie. I look forward to the day that the unforgettable, resounding snap I grew to like so much graces the Silver screen, but imagine I’ll be waiting a while.

Between the sound design and Williams’ score, sound gave Star Wars a reality that most SF films had lacked — and really still often lack. That light-saber sound is so perfect, if we invented one you just know that it would sound just like that when we first fired one up.
