Confounding factor: the type of person who smokes marijuana (despite its illegality and remaining, albeit small, social opprobrium) is also the type of person who is more likely to do hard drugs.

I.e. it is not because of the pot that someone goes on to harder drugs, but rather because that person was genetically predisposed (or socially) to always do that in the first place.

The third perspective is that mind-altering drugs are Satanic. Only reason alcohol isn't banned is because it didn't take, and nicotine is tolerated because it isn't that mind altering.

Of course 'are Satanic' is just an excuse, and it's debatable what the core motivation is. Atheists say it's the puritan prejudice against enjoying yourself. Jim would say it's about being mean to low status males.

A hardcore HBD adherent would say drug use is all genetic anyway. That they're middle class is 99% of what keeps them off drugs or going into a death spiral if they do use them.
