The Guardian article is not just stupid; its contents are at least somewhat obsolete. Statistics show a reversal of "liberalizing" trends in many sex, family and lifestyle indicators in Japan beginning from about 2005. Things ranging from (dis)approval of out-of-wedlock births to suicides in 30-50yo males and abortion in minors have reversed patterns of many decades. See Statistics on sex and marriage in Japan.

They may shun relationships, but considering that Japan is the world’s number one producer and consumer of adult movies would negate the “no interest in sex” part.

Japan also has the most “love/hour hotels” per capita in the world; they are on every corner.

It doesn’t end with weird things like cucumber flavored soda there; variety extends into the washitsus…
