Somewhat more interesting would be the physics behind surviving an airplane collision with a mountain, and then walking away from it essentially unscathed.

As I recall Dickey was a WWII airman, and also served in Korea, so he knew what he was talking about.

The author was a celebrated Southern prose and poetry writer and professor. He was the one responsible for Deliverance: Jame Dickey. The book is To The White Sea (1993). It is a great read.
