The people from Zacatecas are called Zacatecanos, not Zacatecos. The reason why most of us immigrated to the U.S. is financial. Zacatecas is one of the poorest states in Mexico. It has few jobs, so the people are attracted to the U.S. so they can work and hopefully have a better life. My mother brought my brother and me to the U.S. as children. The change was hard for my brother who became an alcoholic and died young. I took advantage of educational opportunities and was able to work in a field I enjoyed. I am proud to be from Zacatecas but sad that there are so few opportunities for those who wish to stay there.
