It’s amazing how long it took for the Germans to really mobilize their economy for full war production. As far as I know it took them until 1943. Of course the better they do the worse it gets for them; if they win the conventional battles, subjugate Russia, cow Britain, etc, it just ends in a few hundred mushroom clouds sprouting in 1947-48.

Had the Germans come up with the snorkel earlier in the war, they might have done a lot more damage. Also, if Dönitz had had more influence than Räder, more resources might have gone to subs than surface, also to the advantage of the enemy.

And similarly interesting is that it’s statistically more efficient to have those submarines laying mines than chasing down and torpedoing cargo ships.
