If they were in a tribal society, it would be hunt or starve. If they were in a Communist society like the Soviet Union, it would be go to work or (depending on the stage of the regime) be arrested or even be shot.

It is only extremely wealthy societies that can (temporarily) break the link between doing work and receiving benefits.
