They don’t have the proper respect, and they don’t understand how to safely handle a potentially dangerous tool. Instead they have an odd mixture of fascination and obliviousness.

“A child who’s hurt in a fall before the age of 9 is less likely as a teenager to have a fear of heights.”

I use this association in my teaching as an example of hypophobia — kids who dispositionally lack sufficient fear of heights have more injuries due to falls.
