Star Wars: The Digital Movie Collection

Friday, April 10th, 2015

So, the Star Wars movies are finally coming to digital, but they’re coming in “special edition” form. Sigh.

When you’re selling a beloved piece of people’s childhoods, don’t you sell them the version they know and love? I suppose once you start down the dark path of revising the movies, forever will it dominate your destiny.

Thankfully we have the so-called despecialized editions, high-quality fan-made reconstructions of the original trilogy.

That’s as unaltered as it gets, if you can find it.

  2. James Noble says:

    Han shot first.

So, I guess I’m hanging on to my laser disc copies for a while longer…

“I guess I’m hanging on to my laser disc copies.”

Or get the aforementioned gray-market “despecialized edition” of the trilogy, which is 1280x720p HD!

In comparison, Laser Discs are 544×576 at best, and DVDs also go only up to 720×576.

“The Despecialized Edition is the years-long work of a diverse group of people who have taken elements from many different sources and created the ultimate version of the first Star Wars films. It has also been upgraded to display properly on high definition screens, with high-quality sounds and a near perfect image. For now, this represents the closest thing to George’s unaltered originals we can watch.”

It certainly gets my stamp of approval!

  5. Bruce says:

I’m waiting for the new edition ‘Han shot second’ where Leia marries Greedo. Once a princess goes green, she never gets clean!
