Alex J.: Is that a mace in the last (WWI) picture?
Toddy Cat: I remember Luttwak put something like this forward back when he wrote “The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire”. Interesting
Lingu: Highly dependent on the religion. I’m thinking some religions may be more “constructive̶ 1; than others.
Faze: I’ve been saying exactly this for years at dinner parties and getting looks of horror in return. Tyler Cowen has recommended strict religion as a solution to the problems of the ghetto. This is an idea whose time has come.
Toddy Cat: That might work — for now. But there are a lot of good plumbers, electricians, and carpenters south of the border who could make a lot more here. Heck, I can remember college kids working as roofers to make money in the summer — not anymore.
Gwern: I’d guess he’d recommend they go into the trades.
Toddy Cat: Caplan is usually a compass pointing south — you could build quite a life and career for yourself just doing the opposite of what he says. He does have a point, there are a lot of people in college who really shouldn’t be there, but thanks to guys like Caplan the jobs that people who didn’t go to college used to do are now being done by Mexicans, or have been sent offshore. So what are kids in the left half of the bell curve supposed to do, shine Caplan’s shoes?...
A Boy and His Dog: Seems like it would also be useful in a zombie invasion. I quit watching after a few episodes, but I always wondered why the protagonists of The Walking Dead carried around big guns instead of silenced .22s.
Cassander: This reminds me a bit of bars and Prohibition. After Prohibition was repealed, the number of bars in big cities actually went down, because laws restricting bar creation (e.g. liquor licensing, prohibitions of bars near schools) began to be enforced again. Slums might be similar, the result of legal systems strong enough to deter the creation of real buildings, whereas the total, but unenforced prohibition in a place like Hanoi resulted in a speakeasy situation.
Toddy Cat: Well, that would certainly quiet Ferguson down, now wouldn’t it?
